“We look for signs wherever we go: navigating the freeway, exploring a restaurant destination, searching for the bathroom. We seek out ‘signs of life,’ we talk about ‘telltale signs,’ and excavate our past for missed signs — red flags. We are obsessed with signs and signifiers as a species, always on the hunt for the visible that signals that we are on the right track. We believe, intrinsically, in right tracks and wrong tracks, and any song, poem, or proverb that speaks of paths or tracks will tell you that the right way always leads you home. #001 in our collaborative series of Artist Spotlights with Alma Mater Tacoma—this one featuring Gillian Nordlund.
“In a windowless room on the second floor of Spaceworks’ Creative House, Gillian Nordlund’s art erupts in pastel and neon bursts. She works in the corner of the small studio that she shares with her partner and fellow artist, Isaac Olsen. Fluorescent lights bounce off laminated letters spelling ‘C O M E F R I E N D I A N S’ strung triply in a banner across one wall, near a desk stacked with spools of thread, notebooks, paints, and a fortune-cookie note-adorned sewing machine that reads ‘choose your own path.’ When meeting Gillian—whose smile is as big and wild as her teased-out hair—there is never a doubt that this is her mantra…” (read more)
